Design Overview
A shooting board is one of the most useful jigs in hand tool woodworking. Its purpose is simple: to trim the end grain of a workpiece perfectly square using a hand plane. The concept itself is well established, but many traditional designs fix the fence permanently at 90 degrees. In practice, wood movement caused by humidity and temperature changes can slightly affect the geometry over time. In addition, the fence may shift due to accidental impact or long-term use, and even a small deviation can influence squareness. To address this, this design uses a pivot-based adjustment system, allowing the fence to be fine-tuned while maintaining high rigidity. This is important, as shooting end grain generates significant force, and any flexibility can introduce error. That said, not every user requires this level of adjustability. If preferred, the fence can be fixed permanently with glue for a simpler build that still performs reliably. This plan is designed to offer both precision and flexibility, allowing you to choose the approach that best fits your needs.
